Cybersecurity is a significant challenge that all organizations, especially those in higher education, must face. Universities are frequently targeted by malicious actors seeking to infiltrate their systems, steal accounts, and compromise research data. To combat this issue, Louisiana Tech University established a student-run Security Operations Center (SOC). This session will focus on the creation and development of the student-managed SOC. We will discuss how the SOC was established, highlight the strong collaboration between various academic departments, and share our vision of using the SOC to enhance the university's cybersecurity framework while providing students with valuable, hands-on experience in the field.
Additionally, we will outline the next steps in developing academic programs related to cybersecurity and explore the potential for offering SOC services to other interested universities. The SOC also plays a crucial role in securing additional funding sources for the university. We will explain how the SOC can help attract these revenue streams and share our experiences in creating a student-led SOC that effectively prepares students for careers in cybersecurity.
